Friday Night – Mary Queen of Scots House

A House of Royal Tragedy

This remarkable 16th-century fortified house is believed to be where Mary, Queen of Scots stayed during her visit to Jedburgh in 1566 while holding court in the Borders. She remained here for several weeks after returning dangerously ill from her infamous horseback ride to visit the wounded Earl of Bothwell at Hermitage Castle.

It was here that Mary became gravely unwell, reportedly close to death, later saying:

“Would that I had died in Jedburgh.”

Today, the house remains a powerful museum dedicated to her life, downfall, and tragic execution, even displaying her famous death mask. The building itself dates back to the 16th century and is a striking stone tower house overlooking the Jed Water.

Haunted History

Many believe Mary never truly left.

Visitors and investigators have reported:

  • unexplained footsteps on the stone staircase
  • cold spots in Mary’s chamber
  • the scent of flowers appearing with no source
  • mysterious rustling, said to sound like skirts moving across the room
  • sightings of a female apparition believed to be Mary herself

This location carries a heavy emotional energy—more sorrow than fear—and many investigators report intelligent responses during vigils.

Saturday Night – Jedburgh Castle Jail

Scotland’s Most Haunted Jail?

Built between 1820–1824 on the site of the original medieval royal castle and former town gallows, Jedburgh Castle Jail was designed as a “model prison” influenced by prison reformer John Howard.

Before the jail stood here, the site was occupied by the Royal Castle of Jedburgh from the 12th century until its destruction in 1409 to prevent English occupation.

The prison housed men, women, and even children, and although once described as one of Scotland’s more modern prisons, the reality behind the walls was often harsh, lonely, and brutal.

Paranormal Activity

This location has built a fearsome reputation in paranormal circles.

Reported activity includes:

  • shadow figures watching from cell doors
  • heavy cell doors slamming on their own
  • phantom footsteps and whistling in empty corridors
  • the ghostly figure of a phantom piper seen on the battlements
  • strong oppressive presences in the old prison wings
  • reports of poltergeist activity and unexplained touching

The jail even gained media attention after paranormal teams reported extreme activity during investigations.

This is a location that genuinely tests even experienced investigators.
