š The History
Dating back to the 17th century, Wortley Top Forge is a rare surviving example of a traditional water-powered heavy iron forge. Operated for centuries, the forge played a significant role in Britain’s industrial development, producing wrought iron products, railway components, tools and heavy engineering materials.
Powered by its impressive waterwheel and nestled alongside the River Don, the forge was once a place of relentless noise, heat and physical labour. Generations of skilled workers toiled within its stone walls, shaping iron by hand in intense and often dangerous conditions.
Today, much of the original machinery and workshops remain, preserving the atmosphere of a bygone industrial era — and perhaps something more.

Over the years, staff, volunteers and visitors have reported unexplained activity, including:
